Our area has been dealing with the effects of the Coronavirus the last couple weeks. School are out and youth and high school sports have been suspended or cancelled. Topsail Youth Sports Daily has always been about getting our area youth athletes recognition through feature writing. With that said, We have been doing feature spotlight articles on some of our coverage area youth athletes. The spotlight features are created through researching the athlete and putting a personal touch with writing the article. The Phrase “Team Leadership” is a term used in sports from the Youth Leagues to High School. Yes, the coach is suppose to provide leadership for his team. To be a successful team on the field or court team has to have leadership from players on the team. In high school sports you often hear coaches speak of senior leadership. What players are going to make their teammates accountable? What players are going to stay strong in times of adversity? It’s the Senior Leaders. Class of 2020 Twins Jackson and Julia Sullivan are both team leaders for the Basketball and Volleyball programs at Topsail High School.
The Topsail Pirate basketball team has one of the best seasons in recent years. The Pirates advanced to the NCHSAA 3A State Playoffs. Jackson Sullivan a four year member of the Topsail Program was a leader on and of the court for the Pirates. Sullivan, a senior averaged 5.9 points a game for the Pirates. Jackson was the team leader with 186 rebounds for the season averaging 7.8 rebounds per game. Sullivan had his best game of his senior year in a victory over North Brunswick with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assist for the Pirates.
The Topsail Lady Pirate Volleyball finished 17-7 for the season. The Mideastern 3A Conference Champions and advanced to the second round of the NCHSAA 3A State Playoffs. Julia Sullivan was a leader for the Lady Pirates. Sullivan was a four year member of the Topsail Volleyball Program.
The Topsail Lady Pirate Basketball team has a very successful season on the court. The Lady Pirate faced adversity beyond their control late in the season. The Lady Pirates had the Senior Leadership needed to overcome adversity. Julia Sullivan and her senior teammates kept the team positive and focused on the court. It’s not adversity but how you handle adversity that creates your Team Identity. The Lady Pirates handled a very difficult situation with class. Julia Sullivan on the court averaged 10.4 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game for Topsail. Julia has her best game of the season in a conference victory over West Brunswick. Sullivan finished with 25 Points, 10 rebounds and 4 assist for the Lady Pirates.
Jackson and Julia have completed their athletic careers at Topsail. They both are working hard to finish strong academically. Jackson and Julia are great examples of what a “Student Athlete” should be.
