Topsail Football Senior..Gavin Ellis signs with Wake Forest …Demon Deacon Football.

Topsail Pirate Football senior Gavin Ellis committed to Wake Forest Football this past summer. On Wednesday National Signing Day Ellis honored the commitment, signing with Wake Forest University. Ellis opted to finish his high school athletic career at Topsail and not enter Wake Forest on the early entry program. Gavin, a  multi sport athlete will play his senior year of basketball before the Topsail football season begins in February.  Like all student athletes the COVID-19 Pandemic has altered normality in all aspects of of high school sports.

For the student athlete, the challenges and adjustments that have to be made are even more profound. The multi-sport high school athletes have to find the proper balance between Academics and Sports . Time management is key to be a true student athlete. They spend 10-12 months a year at the high school. Topsail Junior Gavin Ellis, a football and basketball  player for the Pirates has met those challenges.

Gavin Ellis put up some impressive stats his junior season with the Topsail football team. Ellis, a wide receiver for the Pirates has 53 pass receptions totaling 1116 yards. Gavin averaged 93 passing yards per game. At the quarterback position Ellis totaled 150 yards and a touchdown. Gavin was selected to several all area teams in including the Topsail Youth Sports Daily 2019 Area Team. Ellis, a conference leader as a wide receiver was named First Team Mideastern 3A/4A All  Conference.

After football season Ellis made the move to the basketball court helping the Topsail basketball team to one of the best seasons in recent years.  Gavin averaged 7 points a game. He led the Pirates making 52 percent of his shots. Ellis totaled 134 rebounds and led the team with 14 blocked shots. As with football Gavin was named to several Media All Area teams.

Ellis had highlights in football  and basketball this season. The “Lights Out Touchdown” With the lights out catching a touchdown pass from quarterback Cody Wallis with the lights out. The fact that the touchdown was overturned did not keep the video being very popular on social media in our area as well as nationwide. On the basketball court Gavin made the winning last second shot in a early conference win over Laney.

In the classroom, on the field, and on the court, Gavin Ellis gets it done!!
