Daily Blog….August 1 2020   With Uncertainty Of Fall Season Sports..High School  Athletes.. Push Forward With Restrictive Workouts

For High School Student Athletes the last six months have been a challenging time for both students and athletes. In March COVID-19 closed the schools and a suspension turned into a cancellation of the spring sports season. The calendar school year was completed with remote learning. For the athlete the “Class of 2020”spring season senior athletes lost their final high school school season on the field or court.

On the positive side the seniors completed there academic requirements and graduated in June. The returning student athletes , the suspension of all sports activities other than zoom or online team or group  meetings with coaches left the athletes with the responsibility of developing as individuals. On June 15th the NCHSAA approved a return to a restricted summer workout plan. Only with approval of the school district. Pender County Schools approved the plan for July 6.  The official start to the fall sports season has been delayed until at the earliest September 1 2020.

The athletes that committed  to putting the work in during the sports dead period on their individual personal development will standout when the season officially begins. Topsail Football Senior Wes Holly, a three year varsity player for the Pirates is a player that has the above characteristics. Holly a  wide receiver for Topsail, not only has developed at the position, he has taken on a leadership role on the team as a group leader. Wes has the commitment and work ethic all coaches look for as a senior leader. Holly excels in the classroom and on the field as a student athlete.  He is undecided on college plans as of now. For now,  Wes will keep working to help the Pirates be the best they can be this season..He is a team player.
