Topsail Softball…. Coach Eric Phillips…. “Coaches Corner Spotlight”

The title of coach and the responsibilities that come with being a coach have a wide range of descriptions. The one thing that stays consistent from  the youth recreation coach through high  school is teaching the fundamentals of the sport. The development of the player is advanced by the the teaching of his or her former coaches. Even as the player reaches high school, mastering the fundamentals of the sport are included in off season and regular season practice plans. As a high school head coach the responsibilities  magnify as you have to prepare the student athlete for life after high school.  It may be playing the sport in college or for some college or entering the Military. Topsail High  Softball Head Coach Eric Phillips has a unique approach to prepare his players for the next level. Phillips and his coaching staff coach the team like a college team to help the prepare for life after high school. The approach is working as Topsail has many players from this years team committed to Division one colleges from this years team.

The Topsail Lady Pirate softball program has a history of success on field. Eric Phillips in his fourth season as leader of the Topsail program has been huge part of that success. In the 2019 season Topsail finished the season 20-4 overall…12-2 Mideastern 3A/4A Conference record…Advanced to Third Round of NCHSAA 3A State Playoffs… Final NC (All Classification Ranking) #22….Final 3A Classification Ranking #6.

This 2020 Lady Pirates season is currently suspended due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. (The season has not officially been cancelled as of the time of this article) The North Carolina High School Athletic Association will make that decision) The Topsail Lady Pirates were off to a great start to the season  4-0 Overall…1-0 Conference Record before the suspension of season.

Coach Phillips is and should be very  proud of the Topsail Program and Team.
